Beginning July 1, 1996, District 18-A had 46 Lions Clubs, 4 Lioness Clubs and 3 Leo Clubs. During the year, one Lions Club (Tunnel Hill) was lost. Three new clubs were started–Atlanta Buckhead Breakfast, Atlanta Hellenic and Douglasville and one Leo Club-Ellijay. The year ended on June 30, 1997 with 48 Lions Clubs, 4 Lioness Clubs and 4 Leo Clubs.

18-A started the year with 1,503 members and ended the year with 1,587 members by International count. However, by our M&A count we ended the year with 1,616 members

Most of the clubs participated in the Lighthouse, Camp for the Blind, LCIF, Leader Dog, White Cane, eyeglasses and many worked in fairs, eyeglasses, hearing aids and helping their own communities in many ways.

The major accomplishments were that 18-A won the District Governor’s Lighthouse Award for the most contributions during the year-$141,978 total with $60,000 for White Cane. We were second in the state in contributions to the Camp and Leader Dog. Twenty Melvin jones Fellows were awarded.

The Canton Club celebrated their 60th anniversary, the Atlanta Metro Club their 4th. Chickamuga their 30th and the Smyrna Club their 50th.

During July 1997-98 the following clubs celebrated Anniversary’s South Cobb, 45th ; Dalton, 60th ; Columbus, 75th ; Boynton, 45th ; Jasper Lioness, 15th; Atlanta Metro, 5th; Hapeville, 50th and Atlanta Hellenic, 1st.

Statewide projects participated in by clubs in 18A were;

Georgia Lions Camp-161 children and young adults with visual disabilities enjoyed an adventure-some and rewarding experience at our camp. District 18A participated in this program. District 18A visited the camp on February 8, 1997, Lions Day.

State White Cane Safety day-several clubs participated.

Georgia Lions State Convention-several clubs attended both the incoming Convention in Macon and the outgoing in Savannah during May 97/98 term.

Send a Kid to Camp day-held September 13, 1997, several clubs raised money for the worthwhile program.

District projects were; Montgomery Lions International Youth Camp-Atlanta Lions hosted approximately 70 young men of this camp for a barbeque dinner at Stone Mountain. This was attended by District 18A, including the District Governor and his wife.

District 18A hosted Youth exchange students from Brazil, Peru, Jordan, Germany, Belgium, Norway, Finland and Japan.

District 18A Governor, Gil Carter hosted a student from Lima, Peru for one month.

The Ellijay club celebrated their 65th Anniversary. The Canton club had several members attend the International Convention in San Diego, Lion Gloria DeVries, Lion Ron Crow and 1st Vice President, James Price.


Lion Polly Burnett of the Calhoun Lions Club did an outstanding job on the District 18A Cookbook project.


District A hosted approximately 400 Georgia Lions at the International Banquet following the board meeting of the officers of Lions International. This was held October 25, 1999.


The District was active in the Habitat for Humanity program during Lion Paul’s year as District Governor.
